Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some frequently asked questions about the project and the website.
Do you have any questions or feedback? Contact us or reach the ESTCP team at er248052@westonsolutions.com.
About the Project
- What is the Global Environmental Regulatory Database?
- The Global Environmental Regulatory Database is an online tool that provides access to environmental regulatory criteria in one place. It allows users to find current regulatory values for specific contaminants, locations, and environmental media. We have intentionally designed the website to be easy to navigate and usable with assistive technologies.
- How is the Global Environmental Regulatory Database associated with the Environmental Security and Technology Certification Program (ESTCP)?
ESTCP has funded the development of this website through ESTCP as part of Technology Transfer project ER24-8052. You can read more about this project at the following link: Read More
- Who is this website for?
- This website is for anyone who needs environmental regulatory information. Users may include Department of Defense project managers, environmental project managers, regulators, consultants, researchers, and government staff. The site is publicly available and does not require specialized training to use.
- How is this website different from other online resources?
- Most online resources provide regulatory information for a single jurisdiction or topic or are behind a paywall. This website combines information from multiple official sources into one searchable tool and is free to the public. It also presents results in a consistent format that can be viewed, filtered, and downloaded.
Using the Website
- How do I use the map and table?
- You can use the map and table to explore regulatory data. Filters let you narrow results by contaminant, location, or environmental media, and results update automatically when filters change. All data and information shown on the map are available in the table for users who prefer a text-based view.
- Refer to our USER GUIDE and Training video below for more information.
About the Team
- Who is involved in the Global Environmental Regulatory Database?
Weston Solutions, Inc. (Weston) is the organization that has taken the project from conceptualization to implementation. Read more about Weston here: https://www.westonsolutions.com/
Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) is the primary funding organization for this project. The ESTCP Environmental Restoration Technical Committee provides review and input during the execution of the project. You can read more about this project, ER24-8052, at the following link: Read More
ESTCP and Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) are independent programs that are jointly managed on behalf of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. Together, SERDP and ESTCP develop and demonstrate innovative, scalable technologies that enhance military readiness, improve warfighter capabilities, and strengthen defense infrastructure. The programs prioritize common sense, cost-effective solutions that support operational effectiveness and reduce regulatory burdens at military installations. https://serdp-estcp.mil/
About the Data
- What contaminants are included in this database?
- Only PFAS and 1,4-dioxane are included in this database. The specific PFAS included are those listed in EPA Method 1633A.
- Only PFAS and 1,4-dioxane are currently included because the regulatory standards are the most dynamic. In the future, it is possible that additional contaminants will be added to the database.
- Why does it look like some states or locations do not have regulatory data?
- Some states or locations may not have regulatory information from official sources for PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. In other cases, information may exist but cannot yet be reliably retrieved or verified using the scraping mechanisms in place. The Weston project team updates the website regularly and as new data become available.
- Where do the data come from?
- All data come directly from official federal, state, and international regulatory agencies. Each result includes source references with links so users can navigate to where the data originated. This helps ensure transparency and trust in the information provided.
- How often is the database updated?
- The database is updated on a regular schedule using automated scraping methods. Updates reflect changes when agencies publish new or revised regulatory information. The timing of updates depends on how often agencies release new data.
